The Jeweler’s Art: Revolutionary Jewelry from the 1960s & 1970s
DIVA The museum of jewelry
Antwerp, Belgium
Step into the bold and transformative world of 1960s and 1970s jewelry design with The Jeweler’s Art: Revolutionary Jewelry from the 1960s & 1970s, an exhibition at Antwerp’s DIVA Museum for Diamonds, Jewelry, and Silver. Designed by the innovative Amsterdam-based architecture firm Beyond Space—founded by Remi Versteeg and Stijn De Weerd, former partners at Space Encounters—this exhibit captures the essence of a design era marked by burnt orange shag carpet, rich brown upholstery, and mirrored surfaces that defined the interiors of the time.
In partnership with the Cincinnati Art Museum, the exhibition showcases more than 100 exquisite pieces from the private collection of renowned Cincinnati-based jewelry collector Kimberly Klosterman. These items highlight the visionary work of both international and independent jewelry designers, including iconic names such as Bulgari, Cartier, and Van Cleef & Arpels. The collection was carefully chosen to emphasize the “uncompromising vision” of the designers of this groundbreaking period, who experimented boldly with materials, scale, and texture.
Visitors will encounter a dazzling array of starburst brooches, organic amoeba-shaped lockets, and futuristic rings that evoke an otherworldly charm. Complementing the jewelry are elements of fashion, music, and product design from the era, embodying the spirit of hedonistic rebellion and the youth-driven cultural revolution that defined the “Swinging Sixties.” The exhibition design, with its playful and unconventional approach, echoes the era’s avant-garde aesthetic and non-conformist spirit.
